Jazz Singer TAKA

1965年名古屋生まれ

エレクトーン教師の母、かつてジャズドラマーを目指した父、ギタリストの弟という、音楽一家に育つ。

ジャズ愛好家の父の影響で、自宅では毎日ジャズのレコードを聴いて育つ。母からの手習いで覚えたエレクトーンの演奏を通じて、様々なジャンルの洋楽のの魅力に触れる。

小学校ではブラスバンドでトランペットを吹き、中学校ではギター・デュオを組んで当時流行りのフォークソングの弾き語り。文化祭や、学校行事のイベントのステージを通じて舞台経験を積む。当時の好きなアーチストは、さだまさし、アリス、オフコース。(卒業生を送る会では、フルバンドを組んで、体育館の舞台て『さよなら』を演奏。)

高校、大学と、一時期演奏活動とは距離をおくが、流行りのニューミュージックでは、飽きたらず、結局フュージョンの世界に没頭。(当時、高中正義、スクエア、カシオペア、パット・メセニーなどを好んで聴く。)

米国生活を終えて帰国後に重度の喘息に悩まされ、歌うことは一度は諦め、音楽とは無縁の生活を送ると思っていたが、呼吸器疾患の専門の医師に出会い、忍耐強く治療を進め、数年前から、やっと歌唱ができるまでに快復。

元々、英語の発音を磨くために師事していた、発音矯正のトレーナーが、ジャズボーカリストだったこともあり、発音の矯正の中でジャズを歌うちに、改めてジャズの魅力に目覚め、ジャズボーカリストとしての活動を開始。

ここ数年は、都内のジャズクラブを中心に演奏活動を行い、海外の友人たちからよく言われる『癒し系(soothing voice)』の声を力に、美しい英語で、歌詞のもつ世界観をお伝えすることを目標に歌唱に励んでいる。

Nurtured in a musically inclined family—his mother, a keyboard teacher; his father, having once pursued a career as a drummer—it was expected that TAKA would pursue the same interest—music. Taka started off playing a Yamaha electric piano during his formative years. Such an activity led him to a wide variety of music genre including the standard number of jazz and pop.

He played in a brass band during elementary; he was skilled with the trumpet. In middle school, he was the lead vocalist in a singing guitar duo that sang Japanese pop and folk songs. But Taka's musical journey was not as smooth as expected. For years, he had suffered from serious asthma which almost made him give up singing. This was the time that he left music and pursued other fields of interest.

Taka joined the debating squad at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and participated in the All-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championships in 1999 as a member of the team from NUS. After he came back to Japan, he won the English debate competitions sponsored by the English Speaking Union of Japan in 2003 and 2004.

Other than music, Taka was madly into baseball and skiing. He used to teach skiing to some young students. He used to engage in many social activities, but he prefers, more than anything to sing. It is his greatest asset as a musician.

After years of asthma treatment, finally, he returned to the music scene as a jazz vocalist. He deeply admired his jazz-loving father who imbued him with abundant beautiful jazz standard in his youth. His father's strong passion for jazz had a very strong influence on him.

Taka's initiative to cover jazz songs began with the encouragement of his followers on YouTube. His favorite singers include Michael Bublé, Diana Krall, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan. His voice is soothing, cool, collected, and calming—traits which a jazz singer should bear. Many of his fans resemble his voice to that of the singer Josè Mari Chan. Taka emphasizes that he continues to master American accent to perfect his diction when singing jazz.

Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1965, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Physics from Tokyo University of Science in 1990, and Master of Business Administration from National University of Singapore in 1999. He was Visiting Fellow at a prestigious think tank: Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington D.C. from 2004 to 2007.

Together with his impeccable career as a businessperson, he is now pursuing his passion as a jazz singer. Wish him luck in his future endeavor!
